How to Reply to a Brand DM: 8 Templates That Actually Get Responses

Why most creator DM replies fail

Three mistakes kill 80% of brand DM conversations:

  1. Too eager — "OMG yes I love your brand!" signals you'll work cheap
  2. Too short — "Sure, send details" wastes the brand's next message
  3. No questions — leaves brand to set every term

The 4-question framework

Every first reply should ask:

  1. Deliverables — what exactly (Reel? Story set? Whitelisting?)
  2. Exclusivity — how long, what category
  3. Usage rights — organic only, or paid social?
  4. Budget range — "what range are you working in?"
Use the free rate calculator before replying so you have a number ready when they share scope.

Template 1 — Cold DM from unknown brand

Thanks for reaching out! Happy to chat about a collab. Quick questions before I send a quote: (1) what deliverables are you thinking, (2) is there an exclusivity period, (3) any usage rights beyond organic, and (4) what budget range are you working in? I can pull together a tailored package once I know.

Template 2 — Brand you LOVE (don't fangirl)

Big fan of [Brand] — would love to find a fit. Same 4 questions to scope this properly: deliverables, exclusivity window, usage rights, and budget range. Once I have those I'll send a focused proposal.

Template 3 — "Free product / exposure" offers

Appreciate the offer. I don't take product-only collabs at this stage, but happy to discuss a paid partnership if there's budget. My base for a single Reel in [niche] starts at $[X].

Template 4 — Brand asking your rate first

Rates depend on scope, so quick before I quote: deliverables, exclusivity, usage rights, and target budget range? Once I have those it's a 5-minute reply.

Template 5 — Brand mentions a competitor (sensitive)

Thanks — I'm currently in an exclusivity window with [competitor] until [date]. Happy to revisit after that, or to scope something for a non-competing product line in the meantime.

Template 6 — Repeat brand wants another deal

Great to work together again. Same scope as last time, or are we expanding? I'll send updated rate confirmation once I know.

Template 7 — Agency reaching out

Thanks! Quick scoping questions: which brand, what deliverables, exclusivity, usage, and what budget did the brand allocate for this campaign?

Template 8 — Brand ghosting after initial interest

Hi [Name] — circling back on the [Brand] partnership we discussed [date]. Still keen if it's on your roadmap. Otherwise no worries — let me know either way and I'll close the file.

The bigger picture

Replies are only the first step. The real wins come from contract review and negotiation downstream — see 10 Influencer Contract Red Flags for what to watch for once a brand sends paperwork. And use bio templates to make sure they convert when they click through.
